Geography is a common interest among many people because it encompasses a different number of topics that perk up the interest of folks from varying fields. Geography is pivotal in determining the course of human history. It touches various subjects like economics, sociology, anthropology, history, mathematics, engineering, the natural sciences, and so much more. For the person who is deeply in love with the world, geography is a natural fit for an interest.

Many careers are dependent on people who are deeply interested in geography. In the 21st century, one such field concerns geospatial technologies, i.e. GIS. GIS, which stands for geographic information systems, are systems utilized in order to collect, consolidate, and analyze information based on their associated geographically linked data. It combines together fields like cartography, statistical analysis, and database management into one coherent system. For example, you have information on which sections of the city have the heaviest traffic. Using GIS, you can map this bits of information and from there deduce what causes the heavy traffic in those areas.

Career opportunities come abound for the GIS expert due to the systems diversified applications in so many fields. A lot of these jobs are in local government although private entities are also finding uses for GIS. More opportunities are available the longer your experiences are and the more capable you are of programmatically modifying GIS in order to suit a particular purpose. A good educational background touching GIS is, of course, deemed necessary. Subjects in computer science (particularly in database management) could also go a long way in establishing yourself in this career.

There used to be a time when geography as an interest is thought to be mainly useless information without any clear opportunities for employment (as if the point of getting interested in something is to get employed anyway) but today, GIS brings that promise that there is something to get all giddy when talking about geography. Now there's more reason to become a mapping geek.
